Adesanya will most likely make his first title defense against Paulo Costa in early 2020. However, he’s been saying for months that he eventually wants to move up to light heavyweight and dethrone Jon ‘Bones’ Jones.
Both fighters have engaged in a war of words for several months. Adesanya said in an interview earlier this week that he’d like to face Jones in early 2021 at “Raiders Stadium in Las Vegas.”
Beforehand, he feels like he should defend his middleweight strap a few times, as he told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Monday. Jones then replied to Adesanya’s comments:
Whatever the case, Bovada opened odds for this potential showdown earlier today. The offshore betting shop sent Jones out as a -550 favorite, leaving ‘The Last Stylebender’ as a +375 underdog.
Also, BetOnline opened Adesanya as a -140 favorite vs. Costa on Sunday. That number is now up to -175 with Costa as the +150 underdog.
The 30-year-old Adesanya is 18-0 in his mixed martial arts career, going 7-0 in the UFC since his Octagon debut on Feb. 11 of 2018. He has earned four Performance of the Night bonuses and two Fight of the Night awards in his seven appearances for the promotion in a 20-month span.

Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones are two of the most popular mixed martial artists on the planet. For years, fans have been debating how a fight between the two champions would play out. The likelihood of this ever happening seemed slim, though. New reports now indicate the Adesanya vs. Jones fight could end up coming together toward the end of 2021.

Jon is currently training to move into the heavyweight division. Adesanya is also jumping up in weight to challenge for the light-heavyweight title this weekend. Now is a great time to discuss what could lead to the super-fight between these two men.
Let’s get into it!
Israel Adesanya is Prepared to Make History on Saturday
On February 11 of 2018, Israel Adesanya made his debut with the UFC. Less than two years later, he won the undisputed middleweight championship of the world. He’s now 20-0 in MMA and many believe he’s the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter.
Adesanya has already recorded two defenses of his middleweight title. Most recently, he defeated Paulo Costa via TKO in the second round. His striking level is unmatched and he seems to be entering into his fighting prime right now.
On Saturday, “The Last Stylebender” will be making his move into the light-heavyweight division. He’s set to challenge Jan Blachowicz for his 205-pound title. A win would make Israel one of the few men to ever hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously.
This is one of the best fights in UFC history. Contrary to popular belief, it’s an extremely tough test for Adesanya. Jan Blachowicz is a tremendous power puncher and has improved massively over the past few years.
There is a method to Israel’s madness here. He seems focused on eventually securing a fight with Jon Jones in the future. Capturing the light-heavyweight title seems like the perfect way to achieve that goal.
Both of these men have tests they will need to pass. If everything works out, however, there’s a chance we could see Israel and Jon Jones fighting before the end of 2021.

Here’s When to Expect the Adesanya vs. Jones Fight
A true super-fight in MMA only takes place every few years. Fans have been treated to some good ones in the past. Fights like GSP vs. Penn 2, Cormier vs. Miocic, and McGregor vs. Alvarez come to mind.
The MMA community loves to see two champions competing against one another. There are a million things that need to come together for these fights to happen, though. Many now feel there is a clear path for the Adesanya vs. Jones fight to happen this year.
Obviously, Israel is set to challenge for the light-heavyweight belt this weekend. A win could prompt him to vacate the middleweight belt to focus on things at 205 pounds. Jones is set to challenge for the heavyweight title at some point this summer. A title win may be enough for Jon to move back down in weight where he seems to be the best.
Adesanya is constantly asked about the matchup with Jones. He finally gave an answer on when this could come together. Some were surprised to hear that the middleweight champion is looking at.
“Unfortunately it may not be in summer or July, but there is still December. There is still December 2021,” Israel said. “All I know is that fight needs a crowd. I can’t do that in an empty arena.”
This timeline seems to make the most sense. Jones will likely be busy until sometime next fall or winter. That could give Adesanya time to capture and perhaps even defend the light-heavyweight championship.
